Sit-on-top Kayaking

We have reviewed tons of fishing kayaks on Paddle Pursuits. Basically, there are two styles of fishing kayaks: sit in and sit on top. The purpose of this particular article is to focus on sit on top kayaks.

What are the benefits of sit on top kayaks? What are the downfalls? Why should you choose a sit on top kayak over a sit in kayak?

We will go over all of those things in this article, and hopefully we will help you find the best choice for you! It should be noted that both types of kayaks have tons of pros and cons which we will cover.

What are the Benefits of a Sit on Top Fishing Kayak

Maneuverability: sit on top kayaks accommodate all different styles of fishing. They allow you to stand up, sit down, and there are accessories to aid you in fly fishing as well.

Stability: sit on top kayaks have to be wide enough to stabilize you when you’re standing and/or fly fishing. Designers kept this in mind when they engineered the kayaks.

Simplicity: there are a few different benefits that come with the simplicity of a sit on top kayak: if you tip over, it’s easy to flip back over with little to no bailing, also the simple design makes it easy to transport.

Wilderness Systems produce awesome kayaks for all sorts of different types of kayakers! Although this particular kayak isn’t billed as a “fishing kayak” per say, it’s definitely fitted for fishing.

Wilderness Systems have been a big player in the kayak market for years now. They provide a top tier product for a reasonable price. Additionally, they are just kayaking geniuses, offering support, advice, tips and information to companies or individuals interested in kayak fishing! Ocean Kayak Trident 11 Angler Kayak

Ocean Kayak is a brand we have thrown at you folks a ton. We don’t have a plug from them, trust us. However, we do think they are leaders in the fishing kayak market. They have an awesome product line. Their kayaks are sturdy, comfortable, and top of the line.

The Trident is no exception. It’s sturdy and efficient in any water application. It comes loaded with great features that benefit the kayak both aesthetically and in performance. Although this is the smallest of the Trident line, it still really packs a punch. The Trident 11 will generally come at better price than the others, but it is just as stable and appealing.

Perception Sport Pescador 12 Angler Kayak

We wanted to include a more economical version. The Perception Sport Pescador is an excellent buy for those wanting to give kayak fishing a try but aren’t willing to spend a fortune doing it. We get it. We think the Pescador will give you a ton of bang for your buck.

We talked to a bunch of people who used the Pescador, and they had nothing but good things to say. In fact, we really couldn’t find anybody who wasn’t happy with their choice. We believe this is because the Pescador doesn’t try to overdue it. It’s a simple, modest kayak that aims to please, and it does a great job.

Ocean Kayak Prowler Big Game Angler Sit-On-Top Fishing Kayak

We wanted to end on a good note here, and the Ocean Kayak Prowler Big Game Angler is just solid. This is basically like paddling your own platform out in the middle of the water. The width and stability is unparalleled. Additionally, the Prowler features: two flush mount rod holders, angler graphics, adjustable foot pegs, molded-in cup holder, paddle keepers, and transducer compatible scupper. While this kayak does have some additional features, it clearly puts more emphasis on providing the best kayak fishing platform available, and it does a fantastic job doing so.

Although we added this kayak last, that certainly doesn’t speak to its functionality. This is one of most reliable sit on top fishing kayaks available.
